Beginning Farmer Training & Land Access Opportunity

Southside Community Land Trust supports beginning farmers through training, technical assistance, access to land, and access to market channels. We welcome new farmers and prospective farmers to participate in our programs. Participating in training programs makes you eligible to lease available SCLT land and to sell through SCLT market opportunities.

Throughout 2017 SCLT will offer workshops and hands-on training opportunities including how to sell at farmers market, hands-on farmers market training, apprenticeships, hands-on training in preparing product for aggregation, financial tracking, soil health, how to access USDA programs, and on farm technical assistance. Also in spring 2017, SCLT will make available for lease three 1/4-1/2 acre plots at Urban Edge Farm in western Cranston. These plots are part of a training program and the selected farmers commit to participate in production, business, and marketing trainings as a condition of the rental agreement.

To apply for this training and land access program, fill out the application available here: uef-farm-application. Applications are due November 18.

The participants will be selected based on: agricultural experience; experience selling vegetables; participation in SCLT training programs, soundness of the proposed business plan; and willingness to contribute to Urban Edge Farm’s shared operations. We are particularly looking for business plans that increase the fresh fruits and vegetables available to urban areas with limited access to healthy food.
