3 OPEN Positions at SCLT

WOW – can you believe it?  There are 3 great job opportunities at SCLT.

We are still in search mode for the Year-Long AMERICORPS VISTA position that we posted a few days ago.  The deadline for that position is still April 22, 2015.  Now, we are also looking for a Summer Associate.  This is a full time position from May 1 – Aug 31 and the deadline is April 15.  Finally, we are looking for a Summer AMERICORPS VISTA member.  This is an 8-week full time position with a deadline of April 24.

***SCLT Summer Associate***

Organization Description:  Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) provides access to land, education and other resources so people in Greater Providence can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community food systems where locally produced, affordable, and healthy food is available to all.  Each year, over 2,500 people benefit from SCLT’s programs which include community gardens, youth employment and education, garden leadership training, food growing and nutrition workshops, and new farmer development.

Position Summary: The Summer Associate will support the following SCLT programs:  Summer Youth Program, Adult Gardening “Plant Providence” Workshops, Garden Resource Program

Job Duties:

Summer Youth Program

  • Assist the Farm, Food and Youth Program Director with all aspects of the SCLT Intern and Summer Youth Programs
  • Participate in Youth Intern trainings and activities
  • Deliver SCLT 6 week youth program at 2-3 program sites (once a week for 6 weeks)
  • Schedule and participate in community planning meetings for the Somerset Hayward Youth Enterprise Farm

Adult Gardening Workshops

  • Secure locations and presenters for SCLT “Plant Providence” Workshops
  • Co-lead or lead workshops as needed
  • Distribute posters at approx. 50 locations
  • Maintain updated Plant Providence website
  • Develop content for Plant Providence facebook, twitter and blog posts.  Work with other SCLT staff to post content as needed

Garden Resource Program

  • Provide staff support for compost distribution sites
  • Schedule and provide staff support for community trainings on food scrap saving (for compost)
  • Assist with resource distribution and technical assistance at community gardens

Other programs and events

  • Develop content for 1 newsletter or e-news article each month
  • Support all SCLT events as needed – including Plant Sale (May 16 and 17)
  • Lead tours and workshops
  • Perform other tasks as required

Schedule:  May 1 through Aug 31.  40 hours per week.  Some flexibility in start and end dates is possible.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience Requirements:

  • Previous work experience.
  • Minimum High School Diploma.  Some college preferred.
  • Experience or interest leading agriculture programs.
  • Experience with youth education and/or programming (grade, middle and/or high school).
  • Oral and written communications skills.  Must be able to publish social media content without errors or significant copy editing support.
  • Computer skills:  Microsoft Word, Excel, email and social media.
  • Interested in continuously improving programs and work processes.
  • Committed to producing an excellent work product.
  • Dedicated to maintaining a positive culture among co-workers and community members.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • The position requires weekend and evening availability.
  • This position requires the physical ability to move/lift heavy objects, to kneel/sit/bend on the ground, and work outdoors in hot or cold weather.

The Summer Associate must positively and professionally represent SCLT in community collaborations and with many of our constituents and partners.  The successful applicant will be inspired by the work, interested in serving the public, motivated to go the extra mile, and respectful of different points of view.

***Summer AMERICORPS VISTA***

Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), in partnership with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, is seeking SUMMER Americorps VISTA Member who will use his or her passion for a more just society along with robust interests and/or abilities in urban agriculture as well as volunteer and resource development to amplify the impact of SCLT’s programs.

Organization Description: SCLT improves health, economic security and the environment in Rhode Island by providing thousands of families with access to land, resources, and education to grow food. We support a network of 43 community gardens and 4 sustainable farms in Greater Providence. We offer nutrition, food preparation and gardening workshops for adults; youth employment and environmental education; beginning farmer support and training; and advocacy for urban agriculture initiatives. SCLT offers a supportive culture and meaningful work experience. SCLT VISTA members and employees develop lifelong friendships and values while advancing environmental, economic and social justice.

Position Description: The VISTA Program Associate is an 8-week position that begins on June 9, 2015. It has been designed to provide the VISTA member with a well-rounded learning and work experience. The position provides opportunities to support multiple program, outreach and fund development goals.

Job Duties: The position supports 3 areas of work: farmers market promotion, fund development and community gardens.

Farmers Market Promotion

  • Work with local farmers, farmers market managers and SCLT youth interns to develop and execute a multi-faceted, grassroots outreach campaign promoting 3 Providence farmers markets
  • Promote SNAP Education and Training programs at Providence farmers markets
  • Assist SCLT staff with providing technical assistance to farmers at SCLT Sankofa market stand

Fund Development

  • Events – Work closely with Development Director and Fund Development Committee to plan and execute fund development events including Harvest Society Dinner, Dexter Ribbon Cutting, Whole Foods 5% day and Flatbread Pizza Nite
  • Contribute content for SCLT enews, newsletters and social media

Community Gardens

  • Develop 2 detailed volunteer training binders: How to Apply for Property Tax Exemption and How to Enter Community Gardener Data into Donor Pro
  • Assist with community garden and farm acquisition activities – documenting purchases, researching sites, soil testing of potential sites
  • Assist SCLT staff to recruit, train and manage volunteers for garden build-out workdays
  • Assist SCLT staff to provide training and support for SCLT youth interns – develop and implement training exercises as well as gardening, nutrition and other activities.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to function independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to advance multiple priorities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office, email and social media
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural setting
  • Conversational Spanish strongly preferred

Schedule and Compensation: 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work is required. Americorps Summer VISTA positions are compensated at $452 pre-tax every 2 weeks and with a choice of $1,212 Educational Award which can be used to pursue further education or an end-or-service cash stipend.
