Last week, we pulled off the first citywide compost delivery to community gardens! This is a great example of The Providence Community Garden Network supporting gardeners by offering bulk material orders. In the future, we’d love to offer bulk orders for seeds, organic fertilizer, cover crop seed, & more. Together, we’re helping community gardeners do what they do best- work together & grow food!
Thanks to Southside Community Land Trust & the Providence Parks Department, compost only cost $5 per garden plot & hundreds of community gardeners across the city pitched it. It was amazing to see Parks Department trucks buzzing around the city full of compost for our gardens. We can’t wait to see nearly 600 community garden plots across Providence bursting with food this summer.
Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney of King Corn fame are driving their farm to Providence – their Truck Farm, that is. April 19-23, they’ll be traveling around the Northeast to present on America’s urban farming revolution.
Truck Farm visits Providence!
Monday, April 19 – 8 p.m.
Salomon Center, De Ciccio Family Auditorium (101)
We’ll be plugging the event again next week to remind everyone that this is a project worth checking out.
Are you as excited about the 18th Annual Rare & Unusual Plant Sale as we are?!? This year, community gardener and local printmaking superstar, Jean Cozzens, is stepping up efforts to give the city of Providence its most beautiful Plant Sale poster ever!
Even more veggies? Try, even more colors! Here are some photos of the poster drawing and color swatches that Jean is currently working on.
This year, as part of our Annual Membership Drive, all Purple Plum level members will receive their very own poster print! Otherwise, posters will also be on sale via Jean’s brand new on-line print secret store!
Pretty soon these beautiful gems will be popping up all over town. Be sure to point them out to your friends and remind them to be in town the weekend of May 15th and 16th so they can head over to City Farm for the Plant Sale!
And remember – if you sign up for your 2010 Membership, you get a sneak preview and 10% discount at the Plant Sale!
* Jean wants us to give the following caveat: the photo of the color samples is pretty off
color-wise, the orange looks a lot more neon than it actually is…
