Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) is seeking a Grants and Outreach Manager who will use his or her passion for a more just society, along with robust abilities in communications, fund development and social media, to amplify the impact of SCLT’s programs.

Organization Description: SCLT improves health, economic security and the environment in Rhode Island by providing thousands of families with access to land, resources, and education to grow food. We support a network of 43 community gardens and 4 sustainable farms in Greater Providence. We offer nutrition, food preparation and gardening workshops for adults; youth employment and environmental education; beginning farmer support and training; and advocacy for urban agriculture initiatives.

Position Description: The Grants and Outreach Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the organization’s grant writing and grant cultivation strategy. Just as importantly, this person oversees the creation and implementation of communications strategies that build relationships with donors, funders, volunteers, community partners and media. At times, this position is supported by interns and/or VISTA staff. The Grants and Outreach Manager works closely with the Executive Director, the Development Director and the Development Associate.

Job Duties:

I.  Grant Strategy – Develop and execute the organization’s grant strategy:

  • Raise approximately $600,000 annually;
  • Work with Executive Director and Program Staff to develop proposals that are attractive to new and existing funders;
  • Each year, manage the entire submission and reporting process for approximately 40 persuasive grant proposals and budgets;
  • Manage portfolio of existing grant relationships and complete “new grant” research;
  • Maintain a grants and grant reports calendar;
  • Maintain hard copy and electronic files for grant proposals, agreements and reporting;
  • Fulfill all grant reporting requirements.

II.  Communications – Design and implement SCLT’s communications plan:

  • Develop content and coordinate production and dissemination of 3 print newsletters, monthly e-newsletters, regular blog posts and a weekly social media strategy;
  • Work with Executive Director and other SCLT staff to develop clear and powerful messages for all communications;
  • Provide information to media outlets and community partners;
  • Cultivate relationships with media professionals to generate newspaper articles, television or radio features/interviews, and other media attention;
  • Create and execute annual communications calendar;
  • Write and submit press releases as needed;
  • Develop, update and disseminate SCLT promotional materials;
  • Update SCLT website content on a monthly basis (minimum);
  • Track email opens, click-throughs, web page activity, etc and make informed recommendations about how to change messages and media as needed;
  • Lead tours of SCLT program sites and make group presentations, speaking with accuracy and confidence about the organization and its programs;
  • Coordinate media opportunities for Executive Director and Program Staff as directed.

III. Other programs and events:

  • Serve as lead staff coordinator for the Urban Ag Kickoff Event in March of each year. Secure venue, coordinate staff and volunteer committee, secure workshop and activity leaders, and all other coordination activities as needed;
  • Coordinate Plant Providence calendar of activities, poster and website production, promotion of workshops and events;
  • Ensure that event/program posters are hung at local community organizations and businesses.
  • Provide staff support for all public and fundraising events;
  • Support SCLT Annual and Membership campaigns;
  • Attend monthly meetings of the SCLT Fund Development Committee and weekly Office of Advancement meetings;
  • Perform other tasks as required.

  • Experienced with Microsoft office suite. Experienced with or excited to learn about using design software and social media (including video) applications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, or related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years writing experience.
  • Previous experience with non-profit fundraising and communications.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience with:

  • Proposal writing, prospect research, and relationship cultivation.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising strategies and information sources.
  • Successfully carrying out a grant strategy that includes government and multi-year grants.
  • Design software, developing content for social media, excel, donor database software.

Schedule: 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Minority candidates are strongly encouraged.   Spanish speaking candidates are strongly encouraged. Salary is $34,000-$46,000 based on experience and qualifications. SCLT offers medical and dental insurance and a generous paid time off program.
