Carrot City Opening Draws Over 150 People!

To celebrate its thirty-year anniversary of helping people grow food in Providence, Southside Community Land Trust is hosting a series of public events throughout 2011. To kick off the year, we were proud to sponsor the Rhode Island debut Carrot City: Designing for Urban Agriculture, an exhibit curated by faculty members in food security and architectural science from Ryerson University in Toronto. The opening took place on February 25th at the American Institute of Architects gallery in downtown Providence, and we were thrilled with the turnout (especially on a cold rainy night)! We hope you enjoy this recap of the evening.

For those of you who missed the opening, the exhibit can still be viewed this week at the AIA gallery (located at 158 Washington St. at the corner of Washington and Snow) on Tuesday the 8th from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and on Thursday the 10th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This may be your last chance to see it before it travels to Casablanca, Morocco!

Thank you to Richard Gutman, director and curator of the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales and a member of our public events committee this year, and Julie Manso, a volunteer for the Community Land Trust, for taking these photos; and thank you to all of the other members of the committee (Sarah Zurier, Deborah Schimberg, Pamela Steager, and Paul Connelly, as well as staff members Jessica Knapp, Michelle Walker, and Skye Hibbard-Swanson) for their work in bringing this event together. Thank you also to the American Institute of Architects Rhode Island for letting us use the space,  Thames and Kosmos for their underwriting of the 30th Anniversary Public Event Series, and to Drs. Komisar and Nasr for coming to Rhode Island to present their work.

Finally, we would like to thank all of the volunteers who served in our setup crew and as gallery attendants for their time and hard work:
