Garden Party

The photos are in from Southside Community Land Trust’s 20th annual City Fest, held last month at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center! This was the first time the event was held indoors, rather than at City Farm, because that Tuesday proved to be a drizzly gray day. Luckily, Davey Lopes is close to the SCLT offices on Somerset Street and provided the perfect rain location. We’re extremely grateful to George and Sterling for letting us take over the facility for the afternoon! Click “Read More” below to see a slideshow of images from the event.

The 200 kids who attended—participants in our summer Children’s Garden program and afterschool Youth Garden Clubs, as well as local community groups—had a terrific time. There were activity stations set up around the gymnasium: kids could get their faces painted, create a peace flag, play games, or dance to the D.J. (along with a few alien pals that showed up from Big Nazo). There was also pizza, lemonade, and popcorn to snack on. Each of the kids who came got to take home a backpack of school supplies generously provided by Citizens Bank and new children’s books donated by the Providence Public Library.

The event was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of another season of educational programs that connected kids with their food, the earth, and their communities, and Chris Fiecoat, this year’s Childrens Garden Coordinator, did a great job organizing it. Thanks to all of the volunteers who came out and supported the Children’s Garden and Youth Garden Clubs and helped to ensure that the kids enjoyed the party, and thanks to Hayden James for taking photos.
