Free Urban Hike/Community Garden Tour Tomorrow

On Saturday, Southside Community Land Trust and Rhode Island Families in Nature are teaming up to offer a free walking tour where parents and children can stroll through the streets of southern Providence to visit four different local community gardens. Rhode Island Families in Nature hosts monthly hikes around the state, but this is the first time they have offered an urban hike, and we’re very glad to be able to offer our gardens as the setting! This event is a great opportunity for families to exercise and experience nature together as well as learn about the urban agriculture projects going on in the city.

If you’d like to go, meet up at 10:15 am at Friendship Cafe at 500 Broad Street; the hike will depart from there at 10:30 am and should take roughly an hour and a half to two hours to complete. The group will return to Friendship Cafe for lunch following visits to the Davey Lopes Recreation Center garden on Dudley Street, the Fertile Underground Communal Garden on Pearl Street, the Somerset Community Garden, and City Farm, which is located on the corner of Dudley and West Clifford Streets. (Because of the amount of walking involved, this activity is recommended for children ages 4 and up.) The weather is supposed to be beautiful on Saturday—we hope you can join in!
